3 Signs of Wear That Could Indicate It’s Time to Replace
Many homeowners don’t think about the water heater unless the water pressure isn’t good in the shower or the water goes cold long before they are ready to get out. Water heater service is the last thing anyone wants to think about when rushing around in the morning before work.
Believe it or not, a water heater installer can prevent crazy morning chaos and cold showers.
Age of the Unit
The expected life expectancy of traditional electric and gas water heaters is 8 to 12 years if the unit falls into the range or is older, consider replacing it- especially if rust is present around the bottom.
A tankless water heater has an average life span of 20 years! The upfront cost of these units is slightly more than traditional units, but it’s worth it.
Inspect for Leaks

At the top of the water heater are inlet and outlet pipes that are often a source of leaks that should be checked periodically. Tighten the fitting with a wrench, and if the leak doesn’t stop, there could be internal damage that a water heater installer should evaluate.
The temperature and pressure relief valves are on either the top or side of the water heater, where when water is heated, and volume expands, the built-in safety is triggered, and pressure is released. If these valves are leaking, immediate replacement is necessary.
Drain valves are located at the bottom of the heater and are used to empty the unit. Hard water and sediment can cause rust around this valve. If leaks happen here, check to ensure that the valve is completely shut. If the valve is closed and water is still present, the repair is necessary.
Water Heater Has Stopped Working

Remember the cold water scenario from before? If the water heater is not heating properly, it’s time to check it out. Most electric water heaters have two heating elements, one at the top and one at the bottom. This is so that the water gets evenly heated.
If the tank is not appropriately sized for the family’s needs, this can cause the water to run cold before everyone has had the chance to bathe or the dishwasher has finished its cycle. Or, if the water heater is too big, energy is being wasted to keep water heated that isn’t needed.
Efficient water heaters that are the proper size for home needs keep energy costs low and provide the best overall experience to homeowners and their families.
